Light It Up!

In the Bahamas we eat outside every chance we get and anyone who knows me, knows that I consider candlelight as necessary to a dinner table setting as the silverware and the food.

In fact, an ideal dinner on the veranda at Hope hill has no electric light whatsoever. To achieve this it takes candles at all levels including lanterns, tall hurricanes, and votives.

Candlelight sets the mood, makes your guests glow & makes even simple suppers sparkle with glamour.

Candlelight, however, is troublesome on windy nights.

The classic tall hourglass hurricane, with its slender top and bottom and round middle, is the perfect shape and historically has been the protection from the wind for tapered candles for centuries. We use these tall hurricanes all about our houses and often on our dining tables too. We also like very low votive light on our tables and lots and lots of it.

I wanted to design something which protected a Low votive candle with the same efficiency and beauty as the classic tall hurricane.

Our Domed Hurricane was the result of a few sample runs. The winning model consists of a glass-bottom saucer and a glass dome with an ample but protected open area at the top and a small votive holder.

We did them with wrapped domes and plain votives and again with plain glass domes and wrapped votives because I could not decide which was prettier and wanted choices!

My tables now have all the low votive light needed on the breezy and even windy nights at Hope Hill.

Don’t let the breeze blow out your sparkle…
